European Rowing U23 Championships: first place in the lightweight men's double scull
After a doubtfull year, caused by covid-19, the European Rowing U23 Championships could be organised in Duisburg, Germany. It took place from 5 until 6 september, our first official competition of 2020.
We started this Europeans as the "underdogs" in the lighweight double sculls, there was very little pressure on our sholders. The heats began saturday morning, we could mannage to win our race pretty easy. This way we could qualify for the semi-finals.
Sunday morning we rowed our semi-final against: Germany, France, Spain, Hungary and the Czech Republic. We mannaged to win again, against all expectations, and take the first place. After our semi-final we knew that we could dream of something more than just rowing the A-final. A medalplace was in our reach.
In the afternoon we rowed our best race ever. After the first 500m we were even against the Germans, the second 1000m took the pace up to take the lead. We were able to expand our lead even more towards the finish. We achieved our first European title! Germany and France finished behind us and won the silver and bronze medal.
